Xiaomi is the fastest growing smartphone brand around the world. Of Late, the company is putting a lot of energy into its R&D departments. Earlier, this year we’ve seen Xiaomi opening an in-house camera division to deliver premium image quality. Today, the co-founder and president of the company, Lin Bin, teases a photography monster with modesty.
The teaser shows an image of an upcoming Xiaomi phone with a whopping 48MP camera resolution. Trust me! the label can’t escape your personal attention. Also, Bin has used this phone for a few weeks and describes it as “not bad”.
The last smartphone to get a significant camera was the mighty Nokia 808 PureView with a 41MP sensor. Also, the latest Huawei Mate 20 Pro has a 40MP sensor.
We expect the smartphone to get a Sony IMX586 sensor that comes with a 48MP quad Bayer sensor. Internally, the camera has a large 1/2” sensor, but it has so many pixels that each one measures just 0.8µm. Also, there is one other option with Samsung Bright GM1 48MP sensor from October. It also has 0.8µm pixels.
Note that both the camera sensors use pixel binnnig to improve image quality. The high pixel count on the camera allows for high-quality digital zoom on the handset. Well, Huawei still uses a separate telephoto module for obtaining the Zoom. It will be interesting to see if Xiaomi uses the same approach or it will follow Google’s approach of doing everything with the right image processing.
