Qualcomm has had taken the PC computing to an entirely distinct level. With the latest invent of Qualcomm intended for Windows 10 computers, the all-new Snapdragon 8cx is capable of two times the performance of the Snapdragon 850 SoC.
The Snapdragon 850 SoC was not a complete SoC built for Windows 10, it was a minor upgrade over the SD845 SoC. The 8cx is the company’s first SoC specifically for Windows 10 PCs only. Besides that, the chipset has a 7nm process design. We expect the SoC to ship around the Q3 of the next year.
The company says that the processor is capable of 2X the performance on the SD850. If it’s true, then it is a big step up from the company. The SD850 already outperforms the Core i5-6300U in multi-core benchmark scores. The SoC scores a little less in the sing;e-cores performance, but the powerful 8cx’s performance may even outperform the current generation Core i5 8th gen part. Well, the ARM processors are now coming far ahead then we were speculating in the past.
Interestingly, the Snapdragon 8cx’s Adreno 680 GPU is capable of handling two 4K HDR displays at the same time. The hardware acceleration on the GPU is capable of 4K HDR video playback at 120fps. The GPU has the prime Kryo 495 cores, and also it has got an integrated X24 Cat.20 LTE modem with a top theoretical download speed of 2Gbps and 316Mbps uploads.
The peripherals support on the chipset is limitless. The SoC has support for Third-gen PCI-E and second-gen USB 3.1. You can support any amount of storage, and also there is a support for the NVMe SSDs. Interestingly, the Hexagon 685 DSP will enable the virtual digital assistant support on the devices. That means you can experience Cortana and Alexa, and Qualcomm’s fourth-gen AI engine is on board too.
The latest chipset has support for QC 4.0, and the Bluetooth 5.0 support exists as well. The fact that even two-in-one laptops can support the SoC shows that the SoC is quite capable. Also, the heat dissipation on these SoC’s is similar to what we’ve seen with the SoCs in smartphones. That means we may see an unrivaled performance with fanless designs in the future laptops. Qualcomm promises multi-day battery life on the devices with 8cx at the core.
Qualcomm Snapdragon 8Cx is the first SoC from Qualcomm to receive a certification for Windows 10 Enterprise edition. That means SD8Cx is critical for adoption by businesses who might be interested in an always-connected PC platform.
Note that the term cx stands for compute extreme, and this is far most the most powerful SoC that Qualcomm has designed.
