The mini LED technology is a huge competitor to the AMOLED screens. While the technology is in existence from the past many years, the technology has now matured enough. Companies have started mass producing the technology, but its yet to reach volume production. The technology is a Big-Big win for the modern LCD IPS displays.
The mini LED’s has more advantages to it, has a support for active matrix LED panels. These mini LED’s will provide greater backlighting on the LCD displays. The technology is also easier to produce and the cost is considerably lower. Another advantage on the LCD’s with this technology is the large improvements in the HDR performance. Well, this goes to the large number of LED’s that will fit inside the LCD. For example – a 5-inch phone display incorporates about 25 LED units, while the mini LED backlight can feature 9,000 to 10,000 units.
Besides, the performance gains over conventional LCD panels are said to be mind-blowing. Sources say that brightness, contrast, color reproduction, and power conservation is far superior to today’s LCDs and can even compete with AMOLED while keeping the production cost in check. With that said, it will provide high granular control, and improve HDR on LCD’s.
Note that these new screens can compete with AMOLED displays in terms of thickness as well. While the AMOLED screen has infinite contrast levels, the new LCD’s will produce a better HDR control.
Well, the new mini LED-backlit panels is a huge step forward, but it is hard to repair, and still costs more to produce. Also, it needs adjusting the CRI (color rendering index) to match one of the currently existing displays. We expect this technology to soon go ahead along with the best AMOLED technology in the nearing future.
