Huawei’s Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro were in leaks from last two months. Now, today Huawei has made both of these smartphones officials. And, the Pro model of this smartphone sets a benchmark in camera and charging technologies. Also, both of these handsets come with the power of Android’s first 7nm chipset and new Leica camera modules.
Huawei Mate 20 Pro
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro has an upper hand from the Mate 20 Duo. And, it comes with a 6.39” curved OLED display with 1,440p resolution and HDR support. Further, the Mate 20 Pro has a triple camera system at the back. Now, the primary camera on this smartphone is 40MP Quad Bayer sensor with f/1.8 wide-angle lens. Rest, there is another 20Mp sensor with f/2.2 ultra-wide lens. Also, there is an 8MP camera with an 80mm f/2.2 telephoto camera.
Interestingly, the Mate 20 Pro can do some macro shots really well. And, the macros can be taken from just 2.5cm / 1in. Further, the smartphone can shoot Video with AI Cinema Mode. And, this can adjust the color tint, saturation and brightness of a clip to enhance the mood. The camera also features a Selective desaturation mode. And, that can render people in full color upon a black & white background.
Now, speaking of the AI, the Huawei’s new Kirin 980 is powerful enough to bypass the cloud. It can, for example, detect similar videos and extract sections of them to make a 10-second highlights reel.
Lastly, the front camera on this smartphone is a 24MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture. Further, the cameras have all the 3D face scanner modules. And, if you still like the fingerprint scanner than, there’s an in-display fingerprint reader that’s also pressure sensitive.
Now, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro is the first smartphone from the company to come with a new SuperCharge technology. The 40W charging tech from Huawei has an ability to 70% of the 4,200mAh battery in just half an hour (that’s about 2,940mAh). TUV Rheinland has certified that the tech is safe.
Further, to accompany this, there’s a 15W wireless quick charge. And, it can charge the battery from 0% to 30% in half an hour (1,300mAh). And here’s a unique trick – Wireless Reverse Charging can share the phone’s juice with other devices.
The Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with a stereo sounding speaker. The arrangement is new. And, there’s no grille on the bottom, instead, the hole for the USB-C port is used. Also, the Huawei Mate 20 Pro comes with IP68 certification. Lastly, the handset includes Dual band GPS and Dual VoLTE for better connectivity.
Huawei Mate 20
The Huawei Mate 20 is the cheaper of the two smartphones. And, has a few different things going on. The smartphone has a 6.53” flat LCD with 1080p resolution. The display comes with a waterdrop notch. And, another change is the triple camera. It’s still ultra-wide, wide and tele, but with different sensors and lenses.
Now, the main shooter on this smartphone has a 12MP sensor with f/1.8 aperture. Rest, there is a 16MP camera with a f/2.2 ultra-wide lens and an 8MP 52mm f/2.4 telephoto cam. The options like the 2.5cm / 1in macro mode and the AI features are still available with this camera arrangement.
Further, the front of this device houses a whopping 24MP selfie camera with a teardrop notch. But, the smartphone lacks a 3D face scanner. Also, there exists a fingerprint reader is on the back, below the triple camera.
The Mate 20 features a massive 4,000mAh battery. But, the smartphone supports the older 22.5W SuperCharge. There’s no wireless charging here in either direction. The smartphone charges over USB-C and, unlike the Pro, there’s a classic 3.5mm headphone jack.
Lastly, features like stereo speakers and waterproofing are missing from this smartphone.
Now, the biggest change that comes to the world of Android is the Kirin 980 chipset. Well, this is the first 7nm chip for Android phones and also the first to use ARM’s new Cortex-A76 cores. Now, just like the A12 bionic chipset on Apple, the Kirin 980 packs 6.9 billion transistors. Also, this is 60% more than its predecessor.
Further, the new tech inside this chip promises a 75% boost in performance. And, the chipset will come with 58% improved power efficiency over the A73 cores in the Kirin 970.
The architecture on the kirin is a three-tier design – two A76 as the big cores, two more A76 as medium cores and, finally, four small A55 cores. Also, the chipset features a dual NPU for all the AI tasks, part of which are memory optimizations to ensure a smooth performance.
Now, we’re happy to see EMUI 9.0 out of the box, as this new version of EMUI is based on 9.0 Pie.
Storage and RAM
The Mate 20 Pro comes with 6GB of RAM and 128GB storage. Both of these smartphones will be available by the end of this month. And, introduces a new nano-memory card format. These new memory chips can expand the storage of the phone upto 256GB. And, the company is hoping to get the backing of the SD Alliance and make this a global standard, but that sounds like it may take a substantial amount of time to materialize.
