LG Display is by no doubt the world’s most extensive manufacturer and supplier of LCD and holds the second position when it comes to OLEDs and flexible displays. Apple knows it and the report surfacing around from about two potential weeks claims that LG is in final negotiations with Apple for OLED panels. The number of OLED panels to be supplied by LG is 2 to 4 million, as per previous rumors.
A South Korean media reveals that LG will be the only supplier for the 2018 6.1-inch iPhone’s LCD panels. The new deal signed between the two companies makes LG, supply both LCD and OLED panels for the company’s 2018 range of iPhones, according to a new report by Korea-based Newspin (Via DigiTimes). The contract will see LG Display ship nearby 20 million LCD smartphone panels to Apple in 2018, according to this new rumored article.
Along with the improving yield rate at the E6 plant in Paju, Korea, LG Display is expected to acquire the majority of 6.5-inch OLED panel orders from Apple in 2019, and consequently will ramp up its OLED panel shipments to 10 million units in the year, said the report.
Apple’s desire for both LCD and OLED supplies will further help LG Display improve its financial constraints, said the report, noting that the company posted a net loss of KRW98.3 billion (US$87.04 million) in the first quarter of 2018 with a prospect of the losses broadening to KRW196.8 billion for the second quarter.
