The mobile gaming market is progressing rapidly, especially in Q3 2019. Attributable to this highly competitive smartphone gaming business, companies say, “Nubia, Asus, Xiaomi, and Samsung” are beefing up their phones with Plus grade chipsets, higher capacity batteries and much more. Today, Xiaomi joins the competition with its all-new Black Shark 2 Pro gamers-centric smartphone.
Black Shark is a strong competitor to other smartphone gaming brands in the market. Xiaomi, to provide an affordable game-play experience to consumers, keeps the pricing of their gaming phones relatively low. Razer, Asus, and Nubia might be the gaming phone champions. However, Xiaomi’s price to value ratio is simply unbeatable. Well, this time around, the company is using the same formula for its Black Shark 2 Pro.
With that said, the 12GB/128GB variant of the phone is priced in China at CNY 2,999 (roughly Rs. 30,000). Super excited? Well, the 12GB/256GB configuration will cost merely at CNY 3,499 (roughly Rs. 35,000). Besides, the phone will go on sale on August 2 with two color options: Electric Black and Ice Ash.
An upgrade in design.
Like the Asus Rog 2, the Black Shark 2 has a slightly tuned design for a purpose. The latest improves the grip of holding the phone. Besides, it adds two more RGB LED lights on either side of the Black Shark logo. The phone measures 163.61×75.01×8.77mm and weigh 250 grams. Well, Xiaomi says that the design changes are definite. However, regular eye’s won’t be able to catch a massive difference in design.
The Display is Special.
Black Shark 2 Pro is a remarkably capable gaming phone. The 6.39-inch gaming phone has a Full-HD+ 19.5:9 aspect ratio AMOLED display along with TrueView Display support, and 430ppi of pixel density. The AMOLED panel on the phone has also got a 240Hz touch report rate. However, the display’s own refresh rate is still 60Hz, and this is the only downside.
So, What’s special about the display? Well, the updated version improves on the touch response speed of the display by around seven milliseconds. That means the new display has got a touch response speed down to 34.7ms from 43.5ms. Taking into consideration the Asus ROG Phone II, that phone has a latency of 49ms. In case you don’t know a mere millisecond can be a deciding factor between a win and a loss in competitive play. Also, the display hides beneath an In-display fingerprint sensor which is quite common to see in phones these days.
The Specsheet Champion.
For the game player, they must be happy, as the Black Shark 2 Pro powers the latest Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 Plus processor. Well, it has got a 4% CPU boost and 15 percent GPU boost in games compared to the standard Snapdragon 855. Note that the storage on the phone is the latest UFS 3.0 standards. As a result, the transferring speeds on the Black Shark 2 Pro will be remarkable. The Black Shark 2 pro packs in a 4,000mAh battery. Besides, it supports a 27W fast charging, as well via USB Type-C port.
The Vanilla Black Shark 2 Features that we Love.
The Black Shark 2 Pro has got a lot of specifications which are similar to the vanilla Black Shark 2. The pressure-sensitive display and MagicTouch makes a return. That means you can customize a control scheme with pressure-sensitive actions. Whatsmore, the X-shaped antenna arrangement also makes a return to keep you from losing connectivity while gaming in landscape mode. In addition, the phone has got an upgraded DC Dimming 2.0 and Liquid Cooling 3.0 + technology.
The Same Boring Camera’s
When it comes to optics, the Gaming phones are never designed to push the limits in this section. But, I’m pretty sure that all the gaming phones in 2019 are likely to get a similar sony made 48-megapixel primary sensor with an f/1.75 lens. We have seen the same camera sensor in the Asus ROG Phone II, the Nubia Red Magic 3, and now comes the Black Shark 2 Pro with the same camera. Anyways, the secondary camera is a 12-megapixel secondary sensor with an f/2.2 lens. Besides, it supports a 2x optical zoom, unlike the other phones which are getting an ultra-wide lens. On the selfie side is a 20-megapixel camera with an f/2.0 lens on top.
With the Black Shark 2 Pro, it seems like Black Shark, Razer, and Asus have carved out a nascent category of their own. While we never preferred gaming phones in the past years, now we think that these phones are worth the attention. But is the Black Shark 2 the gaming phone to go with? Well, in my opinion, the phone is fairly capable for its pricing, but it lacks the Asus Rog punch. Let’s look at the OnePlus 7 Pro, aside from the latest SoC, the phone offers better specifications with not much of a pricing difference. What made the Asus ROG Phone II so special were the gaming accessories and a beefy battery that the phone got launched with. While the Black Shark 2 Pro is an upgrade over its predecessor, it just another gaming phone in the year 2019.
