Say hello to the all-new iPhone 2019 series – the most advanced iPhones which the company Apple has ever put on sales. Today, Apple reveals the iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max to the world. While this year’s iPhone lineup Jam packs the most expensive smartphone hardware in the market, I still feel that this year’s iPhone are boring.
The Iron-Man of the entire line-up is iPhone 11.
First, the Robert Downey Jr. of Apple’s event is the cheaper iPhone 11. Apple’s take on the original rainbow Apple logo makes them produce the iPhone 11 in six new remarkable colors. Available in purple, green, white, black, yellow, and red colors, the iPhone 11 starts just at $699 ( roughly Rs. 64,900 in India).
Besides, this iPhone XR’s successor doesn’t push Apple to discontinue the 2018’s best selling iPhones XR. Most importantly, this nascent iPhone category is now proving to be the most apprehended consumer’s choice for Apple phones.
Built beautifully, but costs less.
The iPhone 11, like any other 2018 iPhone is designed to take a spill and a splash. The outer shell of the iPhone 11 has got the toughest glass in any smartphone. In more simplistic words, both the front glass and back glass on the new iPhones grow even stronger with a dual ion‑exchange process. Aesthetically, the iPhone 11 looks elegant with aluminum and glass sandwich design. The reflective rear panel with frosted camera bump which all melts into a single piece of glass makes it feel a rich offering in hands.
The not so good Liquid Retina HD display
The 6.1″ LCD on the iPhone 11 is still the Liquid Retina HD display. In my opinion, it is still the best looking LCD available on any smartphone in the market. Besides, it is still the familiar roaring complaint from the consumers as it is still merely an HD panel. Well, with the 1792×828-pixel resolution it makes up for a lower pixel density of 326 ppi on iPhone 11. Anyways, it is still a True Tone display with remarkable features like Wide color display (P3), Haptic Touch, and a typical 625 nits max brightness. For the average consumers, they won’t be able to nitpick, and this cheap entry-level variant will still sell like hotcakes.
Incremental battery upgrade on the 11.
Apple says that it’s brand-new iPhone 11 packs a larger battery capacity than the older generations. With that said, it lasts up to 1 hour longer than iPhone XR. Anyways, the reports say that the iPhone 11 packs 10% larger battery capped at 3200 mAh.
The iPhone 11 Pro’s are like Captian America and the Thor for the Pro users.
Before digging into the camera’s and the chipsets, let us dig into the aesthetics of the iPhone 11 Pros. Everything which we mention for iPhone 11 is similar to the iPhone 11 Pro and Pro max, however, there are some noticeable differences. For instance, the iPhone 11 Pro duo gets a frosted glass back instead with reflective glass on the camera bump. Of course, the whole frame of the phone is built of stainless steel and not the aluminum.
iPhones no longer say they are iPhones. Yes, you hear it right!
For aesthetics, Apple removes the iPhone text from all three new iPhones. Yes, it does make a sense as the phone looks much cleaner. Besides, the company also shifts down the placement of the Apple logo on the rear. With no doubts, it is because of the big camera humps on the back of the iPhones. Also, with these small details, the new iPhones look and feel more premium than ever.
The Dual ion-exchange glass finish on the new iPhones comes in for colors – Midnight Green, Silver, Gold, and Space Grey.
iPhone 11 Pro & iPhone 11 Pro Max is the battery beast (The Hulk)
The Pro naming to the 2019 iPhones means a Pro camera, a Pro frosted design, pro performance, and Pro battery life. Anyways, the iPhone 11 Pro battery lasts up to 4 hours longer than iPhone XS. Besides the Pro Max lasts up to 5 hours longer than iPhone XS Max. Interestingly enough, both the Pro iPhones packs inside the box an 18W power adapter. Additionally, the cable is the USB Type-C to lightning port which means Apple is heading in the right direction. Sadly, the vanilla iPhone 11 comes with the regular 5V charger in the box.
Reports suggest a 3500mAh on iPhone 11 Pro Max which is a 20% increase. However, the iPhone 11Pro has a 10% larger battery cell.
The Super Retina XDR display offers a sharp contrast to every eye.
Both the iPhones this year comes with the all-new Super Retina XDR display top on the front. With that said, both the new iPhones support High Dynamic Range with Dolby Vision and HDR10 content like the 2019 Samsung flagships. The display on the smaller iPhone 11 Pro measures 5.8-inch and the one on the Pro Max measures 6.5-inch diagonally. Of course, both of these phones support all-screen OLED Multi‑Touch display.
Most importantly, the brightness levels on the new iPhones reach 800 nits when you’re out in the sun and up to 1200 nits while you’re watching high dynamic content. With 2436×1125-pixel resolution, both new iPhones are sharp to eyes at 458 pixels per inch. Besides, it offers 2,000,000:1 contrast ratio, Haptic touch, Wide color gamut (P3), and True Tone display technology.
Whatsmore, these new displays are power-efficient by up to 15%. Besides, the Dark Mode in iOS 13 will also help in extending the battery life on the latest iPhones. All in all, the new iPhone 11 Pro duo is going to the battery champions.
It just got a whole lot harder to take a bad photo.
Apple says that it is now harder to take an inferior photo from an iPhone. First, the cameras on all three iPhones are the same, except for the lack of a Telephoto lens on the more affordable iPhone 11.
The Pro camera system jam packs a triple camera system on the iPhone 11 Pro duo. As a result of the versatility of the triple cameras on the iPhone 11 Pros, Apple has three‑upped itself.
Apple has three‑upped itself.
First is the wide camera on all three iPhones. Well, this is a new 12MP sensor with ƒ/1.8 aperture and 26mm focal length. In particular, the focusing speed on this camera lens is remarkable. Well, this is the result of 100% Focus Pixels and optical image stabilization on the 6-element lens on these new iPhones.
Second, there is a new Ultra-Wide Camera with ƒ/2.4 aperture and 13mm focal length on 2019 iPhones. The 120° field of view on this 5-element lens provides four times more scene than the standard wide-angle lens on the phone.
The Ultra-Wide Fun
Besides, the third camera is a 12MP Telephoto camera sensor with 52mm focal length and Larger ƒ/2.0 aperture. Also, it is a 6-element lens with Optical image stabilization and capability of 2x optical zoom.
Telephoto is the new Wonder Women Magic.
Not shocked to see an innovation in the Telephoto camera, the 12MP Tele camera now offers an expanded field of view. In other words, the iPhone 11 Pro users can zoom from the Telephoto out to the new Ultra-Wide camera, for an impressive 4x optical zoom range.
Although Apple has put great camera sensors on its new iPhones, the camera application does justice as well. For pro-level camera system, all three camera modes in the default camera app work together seamlessly. Besides, the color-science across all three sensors is the same.
More importantly, we like the way the white balance and exposure is balanced between all three cameras. The computational power of A13 Bionic chip allows for smooth transitions from one camera to the next.
Night mode is the new Spiderman of the iPhone 11 Series.
Exploring the new camera features on iPhone 11, Night mode is one of the fresh ones. I know a lot of people will speak that we already have night mode on Android-powered smartphones. However, Apple takes the cake here with the best implementation of Night mode one can get on any smartphone.
Night mode appears Automatically
Night mode comes on automatically when needed — say, in a Firelight At Dawn, Traffic At Night, Museum Photography, candlelit restaurant, etc. In these situations, the camera shutter on the new iPhones stays open for a bit longer, cranks up the ISO, and take multiple images while optical image stabilization steadies the lens.
How does the Night Mode work?
After taking the photographs camera software goes to work. In post-processing, it aligns the images to correct for movement. Thereafter, it discards the sections which contain a lot of blurs and fuses the sharper portion of the images. Also, it fine-tunes the colors on the images and de-noises the image intelligently. To sum up, the final image looks more natural with more details, less overexposure, and less noise. No camera smartphone in the market with Night mode right now sits against one on the iPhone 11 series.
Power to the portrait mode on iPhone 11 Pro?
Power to the portrait mode on the iPhone 11 Pro’s is now on a new level. The Bokeh looks a bit more natural on the new iPhones with more accurate real-time rendering of some photo effects. Besides, the iPhone 11 Pro can provide a reasonable simulation of the bokeh in its preview. The latest from Samsung’s and Huawei’s have a harder time doing the same. Although the iPhone 11 Pro has depth estimation errors, it sometimes struggles with spectacles or hair by blurring them as well. This might be the pre-released software issue as we did not find similar issues on the prior iPhone models.
Smart HD and High‑Key Light Mono effect.
Anyways, the three cameras on the iPhone 11 Pro works together to bring out some remarkable camera features. The High‑Key Light Mono effect for studio‑style monochromes is one of the new exciting camera modes. Whatsmore, the Portrait Lighting now lets you control the intensity of the light to flatter your subject.
The brand-new Smart HDR feature on the iPhone 11 series works as a Pro as well. Smart HDR brings remarkable lighting and detail to faces while maintaining rich color variation in the background. With this new feature, the new iPhone 11 Series is capable of doing more than even your DSLR’s are capable of doing.
QuickTake is the new Instagram-like mode on the iPhone 11 series.
If you own the new iPhone 11 then be ready when your photo option turns into the video mode. With that being said, there is no need to switch between the two modes now. One just needs to press the photo option a bit longer to start recording. Want to keep the recording going? Swipe right. To take burst photos, swipe left.
Do we need a selfie?
For starters, the iPhone 11 series now comes with a new 12MP TrueDepth camera on the selfie front. It surely is an upgrade from the 8MP sensor which is seeing in the past few years. Apart from that, it can now take selfies in wide angles; wider than the ones from the Samsung Galaxy S10 and Note 10.
More importantly, these new iPhone can now take super‑fun slow-motion selfie videos at 120 fps, or shoot in 4K at 60 fps. For stills, the camera now automatically zooms out when you rotate your iPhone. But, do we need slofies? Ahhhh, at least I don’t it.
iPhone 11 and 11 Pro’s Video Capabilities.
For the video’s, all three iPhone is capable of 4K video recording at 24 fps, 30 fps or 60 fps, and 1080p HD video recording at 30 fps or 60 fps. Also, there the Extended dynamic range for video up to 60 fps, and Optical image stabilization for video. We like the video’s that come out of the ultra-wide camera as well. Although it lacks OIS, the wide field of view gives a gimble like an experience and the videos look stabilized. For the Pro models there exists 2x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out; digital zoom up to 6x, while the iPhone 11 just has the 2x optical zoom out; and digital zoom up to 3x.
Audio zoom feature
Apple in its keynote didn’t say a word for the Audio zoom feature. Anyways, the feature is there but it is not as good as the one in the Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus.
All three iPhones have the feature for apse video with stabilization. Besides, it has Slow-motion video support for 1080p at 120 fps or 240 fps, and Stereo recording as well.
Speakers are as loud as the Star-Lord
The stereo speakers on the iPhone XS and iPhone XR were already in its great league last year. With the introduction os Spatial Audio this year, the iPhones 11 series have become more proficient at Audio.
Most importantly, the new speakers create a more immersive, theatre‑like surround sound experience. In other words, the Spatial audio on 2019 iPhones Simulates surround sound for a more immersive experience.
While the difference is incremental from the last year’s iPhone models, I bet that you’ll love this small change in the iPhone 11 series.
iPhone 11 series is as waterproof as the Aquaman.
iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max has a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 4 meters up to 30 minutes). With that said, these numbers simply outperform all the other phones in the market.
In contrast, the iPhone 11 has a rating of IP68 under IEC standard 60529 (maximum depth of 2 meters up to 30 minutes). Well, this is on par with the iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max in 2018. Also, this means that the iPhone 11 has some serious upgrades in comparison to the iPhone XR.
Cellular and Wireless
The year 2019 was all about innovation, and the 5G network was one of the most important development at the consumer level this year. However, this year’s iPhone skips the 5G networks for two reasons. First, the Qualcomm-Apple war, and second the unstable 5G technology at this point.
Anyways, all three iPhones support GSM/EDGE, UMTS/HSPA+, DC-HSDPA, CDMA EV-DO Rev, Gigabit-class LTE6, 802.11ax Wi‑Fi 6 with MIMO, and Bluetooth 5.0. Besides, there’s the Ultra-Wideband chip, Built-in GPS/GNSS, VoLTE6, NFC with reader mode, and Wi-Fi calling6 as well.
Secure Authentication Like Wonder Women
Like the iPhones in the past two years, the iPhone 11 series comes with a similar level of security. With that said, there’s still no signs of Ultrasonic Touch ID system. However, the Face ID stays for another long year on all three iPhones. Enabled by TrueDepth camera for facial recognition, the Face ID is now 30%. More importantly, It works from farther away. At more angles too.
For implementing the Face ID the company sticks for the notch design on the iPhone 11’s for another year. We predict that the iPhones in 2020 will either get rid of Face ID, or the company will hide the sensors somewhere beneath the AMOLED panels.
Sensors and SIM Card
All three new iPhones packs in all the basic sensors like Three-axis gyro, Accelerometer, Proximity sensor, Ambient light sensor, and Barometer. For SIM Card, the iPhone 11 series gets the support for Dual SIM cards(nano-SIM and eSIM) in most of the markets.
The conclusion is that the iPhone 11 is the Spiderman and iPhone 11 Pro is the Iron Man of the show.
iPhone 11 series as a whole shines as the most elegant looking Apple phones in the market right now. The design on these iPhones is subtle and clean, and the performance is top-notch. The A13 Bionic chips are clearly ahead of its competition, and the computational photography on the 2019 iPhone series is now at its best. For now, the iPhone 11 series is the camera king in the market, but it will soon face its toughest competition from the Google Pixel 4.
If power and cameras are all you need then go for the vanilla iPhone 11. However, if you are a Pro user and you are willing to pay more than you’ll get better display and an extra camera along with better batteries on iPhone 11 Pro models.
