OnePlus will be among the first players in the market to launch a 5G phone. According to Pete Lau, the smartphone will cost $200 to $300 more than the 4G phone, and it may add some more premium features to the list. OnePlus will launch its first 5G smartphone in partnership with EE – the UK carrier. Also, the company will bring the first ever 5G smartphone to European markets.
Interestingly, EE will soon back the 5G networks in London, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Belfast, Birmingham, and Manchester first in 2019. Soon, ten more cities will get the 5G coverage in 2019. Also, the company expects 1500 cities to use their 5G network, even though they will cover only 15% of the UK’s population.
With that said, OnePlus will use the sub-6GHz technology for 5G networks. Well, this is the frequency on which EE 5G works. That means, even after a wider coverage of 5G, the speeds will less than mmWave 5G that AT&T and Verizon are launching in the US. Another warning from Lau: supporting the 5G flavors of multiple carriers will be even trickier than it is for 4G.
Interestingly, the use of multiple antennas for mmWave makes the design really hard. Lau says “It appears impossible to make a nice-looking flagship device, for now”.
Also, Qualcomm announces in a gathering that the first smartphone to feature the Snapdragon 855 SoC will be the OnePlus flagship. Well, there is still no information that it will come along with 5G networks or no.
